If you’re looking for a deliciously light and refreshing drink, you’ll LOVE this Gin Rickey! Made with just 3 simple ingredients and no added sugar, it’s a classic gin cocktail that’s sure to be a favorite!
Every now and then I learn about a new drink and wonder how I’ve lived my entire life without it. I felt that way about the Moscow Mule and the Vodka Press… and now I feel the exact same way about this Gin Rickey.
Who knew that 3 simple ingredients could be SO delicious together… and that a drink with no sugar could be so incredibly refreshing!?
Honestly… I’m all about zero sugar drinks, and I often order vodka seltzers when I’m out. But there’s something about the addition of fresh lime juice that really does take this drink to the next level.
It’s the perfect cocktail for Fridays at home, girls’ night out, or weekends by the pool. Simple, delicious, and refreshing… just the way a good cocktail should be!
Origin of the Gin Rickey
The Gin Rickey was named after Joe Rickey, a Democratic lobbyist living in Washington, D.C. during the late 19th century. Rickey preferred zero-sugar drinks and liked to combine bourbon and carbonated water. Eventually the bourbon was replaced by gin in this recipe.
Ingredients
Gin – I used 2 ounces of Tanqueray Gin. Since gin is one of just 3 ingredients in this recipe, you definitely want to choose a high quality brand.
Lime juice – I used the juice of 1/2 lime, which is approximately 1/2 ounce. Fresh lime juice is best in this recipe.
Seltzer – For the seltzer, you can either use unflavored club soda or your favorite flavor of sparkling water. I used grapefruit sparkling water for an extra citrus kick.
Lime wheels – Save the other half of your lime for the garnish!
How to make a Gin Rickey
- Fill a highball glass with ice.
- Add the gin and the fresh lime juice.
- Top with seltzer and garnish with lime wheels.
Recipe variations
- Swap out the gin for another type of liquor
- Use a combination of fresh lemon and lime juice
- Shake it with ice in a cocktail shaker and strain
- Add additional citrus garnishes
- For a touch of sweetness, add simple syrup or limeade
